Embers
Every candle we make usually starts with a place. This one started with a feeling, the one you get on the first not-as-hot, rainy evening of late August - early September, when you want autumn before it's arrived.
The turn into autumn
You know the evening. It's the end of summer, still around 20 degrees, and then the first rain comes through. It's still too warm for a coat or to light the fireplace, but you are well aware that something inside just switched into full autumn mode. Suddenly the thought of the dark evenings, the heavy jumpers, the smell of fireplace in the neighbourhood, (andapumpkinspicedlattesaywhaaaat) it's all very romantic.
Embers is for that evening and the season that follows.
What it smells like
It's smoke, mostly. This is a heavy, woody scent, and it doesn't pretend to be anything softer. Birch and juniper give it the sharp crackle of a fire just catching, and underneath sits cade wood and amber, darker and warmer, the smell that stays in a room after the flames have burned down.
The closest thing we can point to is the smell you get on your hands after you've reached into a fire to move a log, that pure, smoky, woody note on your fingers. The fireplace with the dying flames at the pub on a Sunday afternoon. Embers is that, held in a candle.
A fire for people without a fireplace
Not every house and flat has a fireplace. Embers is for exactly that, the smell of a log fire in a room that doesn't have one. Light it on a grey afternoon, and the room feels and smells warmer than it is. And if you're one of the lucky ones with a real hearth, it holds its own lit beside it.
A word on strength: this is an intense scent, more so than most of what we make. That's the point of it. If you like your candles heavy and smoky, it'll be your favourite thing come Autumn & Winter. If you prefer something more in the background, our Wild Thyme, Roses and Fig Tree are gentler company.
Made for the season
Like everything we make, Embers is poured by hand in small batches, with natural wax and a fragrance we took time developing so it holds up from the first burn to the last. It's a seasonal one, made for autumn and winter, and it'll come round again each year as the nights draw in.
If you make things yourself or run a shop, we also work with a small number of people on private label candles and scents built from scratch, around a feeling or a place of their own. Get in touch if that's you.
