When life gives you lemons, apparently you're supposed to make lemonade (or something positive like that).
In Cyprus, we mostly just put them on everything!
Quartered wedges on every table. Over meat, fish, salads, potatoes, soups. Watermelon… Fruit salads… When we say Cypriots put lemon on everything, we mean it.
Lemons everywhere and their super fragrant smell was a part of life I took for granted, because it was available in abundance.
I was walking Bless the other day and noticed the trees here have started to turn. Bless is my first ever dog, a cockapoo who showed up to me as a stray pup at a few weeks old when I was still living in Cyprus. He's 15 now, but that’s another story for another time!
All summer the hedgerows here have been full of it. Blackberries everywhere, fruit on the trees, everything green. The last of the summer figs went a few weeks ago, the leaves are going and the trees are giving up what's left before they go bare for winter.
In Cyprus, autumn was quite the opposite. The summers are long and relentless and the citrus trees sit through months of it. Then the heat eases off and the trees start filling up.
Same autumn, two different things. For some people it's the end of something. For others, it’s the beginning of a new cycle of fruit and life starting up again after the ruthless summer heat.
Most lemon scents are built from the fruit, which is why they end up smelling like cleaning products. Lemon trees don't smell like that. There's leaf and wood in there, and it takes the edge off the sharpness.
The smell of lemons as I remember them. And an autumn that, depending on where you are, doesn't have to mean everything is ending. Sometimes it's just the start of the harvest. (candle lover pro tip - Lemon scent goes well with Roses)
