Wild Thyme • Hillside Herbs and Old Stone

If you've walked the South Downs in summer, you've smelled this candle, even if you weren't paying attention. Thyme grows wild in the chalk up there, low to the ground, and you catch it as you go, warm and green and a bit sharp, with lavender drifting up from the gardens lower down. It's one of those smells that's so tied to a place you can't really separate the two.

That walk is where the candle came from. We weren't after a perfumed idea of herbs, more the actual thing, the way it smells to be out on the hills with the Downs going on for miles in front of you.

There's a second half to it, though. Under the warm herbs there's something cooler and older, the smell of stone that's been standing a long time. Anyone who's stepped out of the summer heat into an old Sussex church knows it, the thick walls, the still air, the drop in temperature. Amber and soft woods hold the two together, so Wild Thyme lands somewhere between a herb garden and a cool, old stone room. Fresh enough to lift a space, settled enough to calm it, which is why it works as well in a hallway or a study as it does anywhere else.

We pour it by hand in small batches, with natural wax and a fragrance we took our time developing so it holds up from the first burn to the last. If it's your kind of thing, Fig Tree and Roses (coming soon!) come from the same place, each one built around somewhere that meant something to us.
